PC Magazine has awarded the Olympus Evolt E-500 a 4 out of 5, calling it a "very good entry-level D-SLR that falls just shy of greatness." The 8 megapixel could not unseat their present D-SLR entry-level Editors' Choice, the Nikon D50. The Olympus fell short in the quality of tests shots, with burst mode stopping every 4 or 5 shots. The images showed noise as low as ISO 400, and didn't quite "pop" as much as they did with the Nikon D50. Also, the images showed some fringing.
Overall, the Olympus Evolt E-500 is a worthy alternative to great cameras, like the Nikon D50 and Canon Rebel XT, but not good enough to replace them.
